I wear glasses. I tried contacts once, but they dried out my eyes, and I think I look good in glasses anyway, so I gave them up. I'm a nerd girl, so the nerd girl looks suits me fine.
The last time I got my eyes checked, though, was before I went to graduate school. I'd been putting it off because glasses - mostly the frames, mind you - are expensive and I was not looking forward to the expense. But after much nagging from my mother, I finally made an appointment, only to discover that my right eye had changed one level. My left hadn't changed at all.
I decided to get new frames anyway. I was tired of the ones I'd worn for 3+ years. The ones I picked out were on the tiny This Is What Your Insurance Pays For rack, luckily, so the whole thing - appointment and frames - cost me $35. They came in yesterday.
And here's me! It was windy yesterday, so the curls are wild.
Instead I got a pair of Sofft 'Van Gogh' in bronze metallic. It really looks more like a supple tan leather, but who am I to judge?
Amazingly comfortable - there's a thick, cushiony sole, and I think it's thick enough that I COULD commute in these.
I ordered the above bag the week before last and it arrived at work this morning. I'm really pleased with it, and definitely glad I decided to spend the money to buy it; it's something I can see myself using on a daily basis, for hauling everything from my laptop to the stuff I need for a day in the city.
It was custom-made according to my specifications by Alice Cervantes of Flicka Bags for the extremely reasonable price of $68. Alice is a former reporter who's now designing laptop sleeves, messenger bags, and handbags out of Philadelphia, and it was extremely hard to pick what to order. Her strength is in the funky fabric patterns, in my opinion. Some of them brought to mind Pucci textiles, with their really cool, distinctive style. The above one, called Nico's Closet, was one of my favorites, along with the unfortunately sold out Piccadilly Swirl and Algonquin, which was only available on the Algonquin handbag.
Thanks Alice, for getting me my bag so quickly! It's terrific. And thanks to Amy for pointing out Alice's site to me in the first place.
