In your ultimate dream house, what does your favorite room look like?
It's an Asian-inspired library. Dark green walls, dark woods, low couches and chairs and cushions. Woodcut prints on the wall, and a sleek fireplace to sit by in the winter. Bamboo floors. Heck, maybe my very own Zen rock garden.
And the bookshelves are filled with a crazy mixture of books from Faust to Sherrilyn Kenyon paranormal romance novels.
Maybe someday.

How do you handle phone calls from telemarketers?
I used to be rude, but then I remember - they're just doing their job. Once you've worked in the office of a department store (the go-to spot for the TRULY irate customers) you realize the importance of some courtesy. I usually say "No, thank you." Often, they accept that these days and let me go. If they don't accept it, and keep talking, then I'll just hang up.

Ha Jin. Seriously, if you haven't read "Waiting" or "The Bridegroom," drop what you're doing now.If you could write like one fiction author, who would it be?

What I love about Ha Jin is that he can nail really visually descriptive writing without sacrificing his spare style. That's a constant battle for me. And he excels at tapping into human emotion in a realistic way.
In short, I write like him in my dreams.
What is your favorite day of the week?
Saturday, of course. Because I can sleep in, and I don't have to go to work, and I can slob around in comfortable clothes. All things I can do on Sunday too, of course, but Sunday's downfall is the realization that I have to go back to the daily grind in the morning.
What was the worst job you ever had?

So many options here. There was the year in college I spent working food service, including serving fried eggs at 5:45 am. Then there was the summer I spent working in a cheesesteak fast food joint, which was enough to put me off provolone and beef for a good five years. Then there was Sears. Counting money, being the designated person to bitch to, and having to dress better than the rest of the associates for not any more money.
It did propel me into grad school, though.
